The History

Mahjong dates back to mid-18th century China and the word translates to "sparrow" in some Chinese dialects. This is fitting because of the bird-like clacking sounds the tiles make.

Mahjong came to America in the 1920s and in 1937 the National Mahjong League was created. There were rules created for American Mahjong to allow more people to play. American Mahjong became popular in the 1950s. Today, the National Mahjong League issues annual playing combination cards that dictate winning hands. Impact on Women's History

Mahjong became a platform for women to escape domestic roles and build camaraderie. Mahjong clubs became useful for fundraising and supporting charities. This game challenged gender stereotypes and allowed women to showcase their strategic skills and intelligence.

The role of women in the home was disrupted as women playing were no longer doing their stereotypical housework and it gave them an opportunity to create new relationships. Mahjong clubs also gave some women a chance at financial independence and were offered a source of income through winning and managing clubs.
